| Allan Kardec's The Gospel According to Spiritism (2019 version in English by Cesar Bezerra) - CHAPTER 1. I HAVE NOT COME TO DESTROY THE LAW - |
||
|
The three revelations: Moses, Christ, Spiritism. Alliance of science and religion. - Instructions from the spirits: The new era. 1. Don't think that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. Very truly I say to you, until Heaven and Earth pass, one jot or one period will in no manner pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (Matthew 5:17-18.) Moses 2. The Moses' law has two distinct parts: The God's law and the civil or disciplinary law. The former is invariable. The latter, appropriate to customs and character of people, changes along the time. The civil rules were decreed by Moses. The divine law was made public on mount Sinai through the Ten Commandments: I. I am your God, who took you out from Egypt, from the slavery land. In front of me you shall have no foreign gods. You shall not make any graven image, nor any likeness of anything that is in above Heaven, nor in beneath the Earth, nor in the waters under the Earth. You shall not worship nor serve them. II. You shall not take in vain the God's name. III. Remember to keep the Saturdays holy. IV. Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long upon the land you will be given. V. You shall not kill. VI. You shall not commit adultery. VII. You shall not steal. VIII. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. IX. You shall not covet your neighbor's spouse. X. You shall not covet your neighbor's house, nor their servants, oxen, donkeys, nor anything which belongs to them. This law is for all times and countries. This is why it has a divine character. All the other rules were decreed by Moses, who, through fear, had to restrain a naturally turbulent and undisciplined people and combat the abuses and prejudices they learned during slavery in Egypt. In order to impose authority to his rules, Moses had to give them a divine origin, as other legislators of primitive peoples did. Human authority depended on Creator's power. But only the concept of a terrible God could touch ignorant people, who lacked morality and justice feelings. God, who, through the divine commandments, forbade humans to kill and harm neighbors, would not self-contradict by making extermination a duty. So the Moses' rules, properly taken, were essentially transitory. Christ 3. Jesus did not come to destroy the law, that is, the God's law. He came to fulfill it, that is, to develop it, show its real meaning and adapt it to the human advancement degree. This is why we find, within this law, the principles of duty before God and neighbors, basis of Christian doctrine. Regarding Moses' rules, properly said, Jesus deeply changed them, both in form and substance. Constantly combatting the abuses of outward practices and false interpretations, he radically reformed the Mosaic rules by reducing them to an only commandment: “Love God above all things and your neighbor as yourself.” and adding: this is the whole Law and the Prophets. By the words “Heaven and Earth will only pass after the complete fulfillment of all the law, up to its last jot.”, Jesus meant that the God's law requires entire fulfillment, that is, practice all over the Earth, with all its purity, developments and consequences. In fact, as all humans are children of God and, so, deserve the same care, if that law was promulgated only to benefit a nation or few people, it would have just little use. 4. Jesus
came to fulfill the
prophecies
which
announced his arrival. His authority came from the exceptional nature
of his spirit and divine mission. He came to teach the true life is
in Heaven, and not on Earth. He came to indicate the pathway to
Heaven, the means how to reconcile with God, as well as how to sense
these means as part of the events that come for human destiny
fulfillment. However, Jesus partly silenced many subjects whose
truth, as he declared, was impossible to be completely understood in
those times. In such cases, he just disclosed the truth kernel. He
addressed all subjects, but in a lighter or deeper way. In
order to be understood, some of his teachings required the arising of new ideas and knowledge. These new
concepts
demanded a certain human spirit maturity. Science still had an
important role to play, in favor of birth and growth of these ideas.
Therefore, it was necessary to give time for science to progress. Spiritism
5. Spiritism is the science which has come to explain the nature of spiritual world and its relationship with material world. It shows the spiritual world as something natural, as one of the alive and continuously active nature's forces, as the source of many still incomprehensible phenomena which remain relegated to the realm of imagination and fantasy. Jesus often referred to this interaction between both worlds. This is why many of His lessons remain unintelligible or falsely interpreted. Spiritism offers a key by which all can be explained. 6. Moses personified the Old Testament. Christ, the New Testament. Spiritism is the third revelation of God's law. But nobody personifies it, because it is the collection of teachings transmitted everywhere not by a human, but by spirits who are the voices of Heaven, through countless intermediary cooperators. It is, somehow, a collective body, made by the set of beings of spiritual world, each one offering its lights in order to proclaim the other world and to announce to earthly humans their destiny. 7. As Christ said “I have not come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it.”, Spiritism says “I have not come to destroy the Christian law, but to carry it out.” Aligned to Jesus' teachings, Spiritism has come to develop, complete and clearly explain, to everyone, what has only allegorically been said. It has come, at the predicted time, to fulfill what Christ announced and to prepare the future events accomplishment. It is a work of Christ, who, as he announced, presides the regeneration in progress and prepares the God's kingdom on Earth. Science and Religion alliance 8. Science and religion are the two levers of human intelligence. The former discloses the material world laws. The latter, the moral world laws. But as all these laws have God as their only origin, they cannot contradict each other. If science and religion deny one another, then at least one of them is necessarily mistaken, because God is always coherent. The seeming mismatch among them comes from incorrect interpretations and exclusiveness of both sides. As result, conflicts arise and feed incredulity and intolerance. Time has come to complete the Christ's teachings; to lift the veil which still partly cover them. It is time for science to consider the spiritual elements; for religion to consider the immutable laws of matter; and for both to render mutual help and march together. No longer refuted by science, religion will acquire unshakable power. No longer opposing the logic of facts, religion will agree with reason. Science and religion have been unable to walk together and repelling one another because each one has been using excluding points of view. A link is lacked to join them. This missing link is within the knowledge of the laws which govern the spiritual universe and their relationship with world of matter, laws as immutable as those which rule the planets motion and the existence of all beings. New lights shine when experience proves these relationships. The harmony between faith and reason defeats materialism. But in this matter, as in many others, there are people who decide to remain behind until the general movement drags them or, if they resist, crushes them. A moral revolution now progresses and refines the spirits. After many centuries of preparation, it approaches its climax and will mark a new era in earthly human life. Its consequences are easy to forecast. Social relationships will inevitably change. Nobody will be able to oppose this evolution, because it is presided by God and derived from the progress law, which is a Creator's law. INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE SPIRITS The New Era
9. God is unique. Moses was the spirit entrusted to make the Creator known by Hebrews and pagan peoples. Having the Hebrews as instruments, God self-disclosed through Moses and the prophets. The ups and downs those people suffered attracted attention and removed the veil which hid Divinity. The God's Commandments, given through Moses, contain the essence of the widest Christian morality. However, biblical comments restricted their meaning, because they would be non-understandable, at those times, if entirely pure. Nevertheless, the Ten Commandments have comprised a majestic frontispiece, a beacon destined to light up the pathway that humanity had to follow. The rules Moses taught were appropriate to the advancement degree of the people which he proposed to regenerate. Those people, semi-savage regarding spiritual evolution, were unable to understand that God could be worshiped by means else than holocausts, and that they should forgive enemies. No matter remarkable their intelligence was, according to the materialistic and even scientific and artistic points of view, they were very backward morally, and could never be converted by an entirely spiritual religion. They needed a semi-materialistic representation, as the Hebrew faith presented. The holocausts talked to their senses as the concept of God spoke to their spirits. Jesus began the purest and sublimest morals, the Christian evangelical morality, which will renew the world, join humans and turn them into siblings. It will make charity and love to neighbor blossom forth in all hearts, and a common solidarity to burgeon between nations. This morality will transform the Earth, planet that will become home of higher-order spirits. It is the accomplishment of the progress law, which nature is subject to. Spiritism is a lever God uses to make humanity to go ahead. Time has come in which moral concepts must be developed and follow the same route their predecessors, the liberty ideas, took, in order to bring the progress wished by God. However, this development will certainly demand a hard struggle. In order to reach maturity, ideas need disturbances and discussion, in order to attract people's attention. Once interest is awakened, the morality's beauty and holiness will touch spirits, who, in turn, will embrace a science which gives a key to future life and opens the eternal happiness door. Moses opened the way. Jesus expanded the work. Spiritism will conclude it. - An Israelite spirit. (Mulhouse, 1861.)
10. One day, God, with inexhaustible charity, allowed humans to see the truth through darkness. This day was that of Christ's arrival. However, after that living light was gone, darkness returned. After having options of truth or obscurity, the world lost itself again. Then, like the Old Testament prophets, the spirits have been speaking and warning you. The world trembles on its foundations. Thunder will resound. Remain steady! Spiritism has divine origin because it is based upon the nature's laws. Be sure that everything of divine order has a great and useful goal. Your world loses itself. Science, conducting you to material well-being, but developed at expenses of morals, helps the darkness spirit. As you Christians know, heart and love have to walk together with science. After so many centuries, and despite lots of martyrs' blood, the Christ's kingdom has not come yet. Christians! Return to that master who wants to save you. Everything is easy for those who love and believe. Love fills them with indescribable happiness. Yes, my children! The world is shaken! The good spirits have been repeatedly warning you. Bend yourselves beneath the wind which announces the storm, so that you can resist it. In other words: prepare yourselves. Don't be like the unready sailor who is surprised by the hurricane. The revolution in progress is much more moral than material. The great spirits, divine messengers, spread faith in such a way that all of you, enlightened and zealous workers, can make your humble voices heard. Yes, you are sand grains. But without sand grains there is no mountain. Thus, refuse the words “we are small”. To each human, a mission. To each person, a work. The tiny ants build the tower of their republic. Imperceptible animals raise islands. The new crusade has begun. Apostles of universal peace, not of war, modern Saint Bernards, look ahead and march forward! The worlds' law is the progress law. - Fénelon. (Poitiers, 1861.)
11. Saint Augustine is a major Spiritism spreader. He communicates in many places. The reason why is in the life story of that great Christian philosopher. He belongs to the vigorous phalanx, known as The Church Fathers, to which Christianity owes its most solid bases. Like many others, he was uprooted by the truth splendor from paganism or, rather, from the deepest impiety, when, during his excesses, he felt in his soul that singular vibration that called him to himself and made him understand that happiness was elsewhere, away from material and temporary pleasures; when, like Paul, on the Damascus road, hearing that holly voice that asked: “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”, he exclaimed: “My God! My God! Forgive me! I believe! I am a Christian!” From that moment on, Saint Augustine became one of the strongest Gospel upholders. In his remarkable Confessions, we can find the characteristic and, at the same time, prophetic words he spoke after Saint Monica's death: I am convinced that my mother will visit me and give me advice, revealing what awaits us in the future life. What a great teaching inside these words! What a brilliant foresight of the doctrine which was to come! This is the reason why today, seeing that the time which he presaged to spread the truth has come, he became its zealous herald. We can say he multiplies himself, in order to reply to all those who call him. - Erastus, disciple of Saint Paul. (Paris, 1863.)
Note.
Saint Augustine does not demolish what he built. As many others, he
now sees with spirit's eyes what he was unable to see as man. Free,
his soul beholds new clarity and understands what was
non-understandable for him. New ideas have revealed to him the true
meaning of some words. On Earth, he judged questions according to the
knowledge he had. But, since he saw new lights, he could more
judiciously analyze
subjects. Thus he revised his beliefs on incubus and sucubus spirits,
as well as the condemnation he launched against the antipodes theory.
Now, observing the pure Christianity, he can differently
think
of some questions, while keeping his Christian apostolate. Noticing
in Spiritism the accomplishment of the announced predictions, he
can spread it while maintaining his faith. Today, proclaiming the
doctrine, he leads us toward a more proper and logical texts
interpretation. The same also occurs with other spirits, who are in a
similar position. - The author. ![]() |
