| Allan Kardec's The Gospel According to Spiritism (2019 version by Cesar Bezerra) CHAPTER 20. LAST-HOUR WORKERS |
||
|
Instructions from the spirits: There will be last that will be first. - Mission of Spiritists. - The Lord's workers. 1. The kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers to work in his vineyard. He agreed to pay each worker a denarius for the day and sent them to his farm. About the third hour, he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, “You too. Go and work in my vineyard and I will pay you whatever is right.” So they went working. He went out again about the sixth and the ninth hour and did the same. About the eleventh hour he went out and found still other laborers standing around. He asked them, “Why have you been standing here all day long without working?” “Because no one has hired us,” they answered. He said to them, “Go you and work in my vineyard too.” When evening came, the farmer said to his foreman, “Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last hired ones and going on to the first.” The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each one received a denarius. When the first-hired laborers came, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner, saying, “The last-hired ones worked only one hour and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the work burden and the day heat.” But the farmer answered, “Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the last-hired ones the same amount I gave you. Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?” So there will be last that will be first, and first that will be last. Many are called but few are chosen. (Matthew 20:1-16. See also the wedding feast parable, chapter 18, item 1.) INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE SPIRITS There will be last that will be first 2. The last-hour workers will be entitled to receive whole payment provided they willingly work hard, with neither laziness nor reluctance, all through the opportunity they are granted. However, if they prefer uselessness and procrastination, if they betray their employer's trust by thinking “the later the better”, they will deserve just the laziness salary. What will happen, then, to those who employ their last-hour opportunity to practice evil? What will become of they who disrespect God, disturb families, impair society, abuse trust and innocence, deceive or hurt their neighbors? In short, what will be of those who dedicate their time to harm others? In the very last minute they will kneel before God and beg another opportunity. Then, they will propose doing a tiny part of the task they have disregarded and, in return, they will claim the same pay of the goodness workers. But their request will be denied by the Almighty, who will explain that they have squandered away their time, that they have forgotten what they have been taught, and that they must restart learning from the beginning, in order to qualify themselves to, in a future opportunity, resume working in the same vineyard they abandoned. We are all last-minute workers. For many centuries God has been calling us to work in the love vineyard, but we have been continually rejecting the divine invitation. Now we have our decisive opportunity. Therefore, we should make good use of remaining time and remember that our present existence, however long it might seem, is only a fleeting moment in front of eternity. Constantine, a protective spirit. (Bordeaux, 1863.) 3. Moses and the prophets were among the first-hour workers. Then their labor was continued by the philosophers, apostles and martyrs. Later on, the founders of Christianity gave their contribution. Finally come the Spiritists, who have been announced since the Messiah advent. They will also be paid according to their work. Being the last to arrive, the Spiritists take advantage of intellectual labor of their predecessors because humans must inherit from humans, work is collective and God blesses solidarity. Many pioneers either are alive or will relive in order to complete the work they begun. Indeed some patriarchs, prophets, Jesus' disciples and Christianity spreaders are among the Spiritists, but more enlightened now. Today they work at the mountain summit rather than at the base. Reincarnation explains work continuity. When called to give account of its earthly mandate, the spirit sees the interrupted task, which must be resumed. Matured by experience, the spirit begins the lesson anew, to advance yet further. And all of the workers, of the first and the last hour, with eyes fully open before the profound justice of God, start adoring instead of complaining. Although tied to the past, all humans can today rebuild their own future. Henri Heine. (Paris, 1863.) Mission of Spiritists 4. Do not you perceive the coming storm, which will sweep wickedness and old vices away from the Earth? Praise God, all of you who trust in divine justice! You, apostles of the new belief, disclosed by prophetic voices, go forth and preach reincarnation and charity! Go forth and clarify that the spirits rise according to how well they fulfill their missions and withstand their trials on this planet. Stay confident. The Supreme Majesty watches over you! True Spiritists: you are the God's chosen ones. Go forth and preach the divine word. The time has come. Now you should sacrifice your unnecessary occupations to the Christ's word propagation. Advanced spirits are beside you. Go forth and preach! You will certainly speak to those who reject hearing the God's voice, because it calls them to self-denial. You will preach generosity to the miser; abstinence to the immoral; meekness to the tyrant. Lost words, one might say. However, remember that soil requires hard work to produce fruit. So, be good evangelical tillers! All of you, good-faithed humble people. Help banishing the golden calf worship! Go forth and preach. God guides you! Your minds will be freed and you will communicate better than orators do. The prudent will happily accept your words of consolation, fraternity, hope and peace. What do ambushes matter? Only wolves fall into wolf traps, since the shepherd knows how to protect their sheep. You, who willingly accept mediumship fenomena even lacking a personal experience with it; you, who believe without seeing: march forward! You are more blessed than Saint Thomas. God guides you. Disbelief will vanish before your words. Inside of human heart still lie vices which are heavier than the Himalayas. However, Jesus teaches that faith removes mountains of hindrances. So, depart courageously to remove the selfishness mountain range that future generations must remember just as a legend, in the same way that you just barely know prehistorical life. There will be moral and philosophical subversion worldwide. Nevertheless, the hour comes when divine light will spread everywhere. Take the heavenly word to the big who will despise it; to the scholarly who will demand proof; and to the small who will accept it. Yes. Mainly among simple people you will find faith! They will thank God for the saintly solace you will provide them. Let decision and courage be with you! The plow is ready and the soil awaits. Go working! Thank God for the glorious task you are entrusted. Keep the good road, watch and pray. But pay attention! Among the Spiritists many go astray. We recognize true Spiritists by the charity they teach and practice, by their self-denial, by their love to neighbors, and by the number of afflicted people they comfort. In short, we recognize them by their compliance to the law of love. The chosen ones are those who follow this saintly rule, which is the very essence of God. But woe to they who distort the love law in order to satisfy their vanity and ambition! - Erastus, medium's guardian spirit. (Paris, 1863.) The Lord's workers 5. The time comes when moral evolution on the Earth will be accomplished. Blessed are those who selflessly work in the God's field. Happy are they whose only motivation is charity! They will receive a hundredfold what they expect. Blessed are those who call their fellow beings to get united and work together, so that the Lord may find the task finished when he arrives. He will call all the servants who have joined efforts and silenced discord in order to protect the work. But woe to those who impair the harvest! The storm will take them away. They will beg mercy but the Greatest Judge will ask them: “How can you ask for mercy now, you that were ruthless with your fellow humans, you that denied a helping hand, you that trampled on the weak instead of upholding them? How can you beseech mercy, you that sought recompense in earthly pleasure and pride satisfaction? You have already received the reward you wished. There is nothing else for you. The celestial salary is reserved for they who resign earthly comfort to benefit others.” At this very moment God marks the good servants and separates them from those whose devotion is just apparent. The great regeneration work through Spiritism will be done. The Almighty secures the wages of the good laborers and assigns the hardest challenges to the corageous workers who never draw back from the entrusted task. So, in the kingdom of Heaven there will be last that will be first, and first that will be last. - The Truth Spirit. (Paris, 1862.)
