||
Prayer for a dying one
57. Introduction. The death pang starts the body-soul separation. During this transition the person has one foot on the Earth and the other in the spiritual world. This moment uses to be painful for people who are attached to matter, who have prioritized pleasure and possession instead of virtue, and for those whose conscience is troubled by remorse. On the other hand, for matter-detached people, and for those whose thoughts are lifted up to God, the ties are easier to break. Their final minutes use to be painless. Hence, the soul is connected to the body only by a thread, whereas, in the first case, it is kept chained to flesh by deep roots. In any case, however, prayer helps separation.1
58. Prayer. Merciful God! Here is a soul who is about to leave its earthly body to return to the spiritual homeland. May it enter there in peace. May your mercy be extended over it! Good spirits, who have followed it up while on the Earth: keep staying with it during its passage. Give it strength to endure the final disturbance it still must experience for its future advancement. Inspire it so that, during its last thoughts, it may repent of its wrongs. Guide my thought for it to render separation less painful. Take to this soul consolation and hope at the moment of leaving the body.
