God Text below comes from The Spirits' Book, by Allan Kardec (Book First - Causes. Chapter I) |

(...) What proof do we have of God's existence? "The axiom which you apply in scientific research: There is no effect without a cause. Search the cause of whatever is not a human work and reason will provide you the answer to this question." ¹ To assure ourselves of God's existence, we have only to look at the works of creation. The universe exists, therefore it has a cause. To doubt the God's existence is the same as to doubt that every effect has a cause, and to assume that something can have been made by nothing.----------------------------------------- ¹ The passage placed between inverted commas after each question is the reply made by the communicating spirit. The remarks and developments occasionally added by the author are printed in normal letters. ----------------------------------------- What should be inferred from the intuition of God's existence, which may be said to be a common property of human mind? "That God exists,
because whence could the human mind derive this intuition if it had no
real basis? The inference to be drawn from this intuition
is a corollary of the axiom There
is no effect without a cause." May not our intuitive sense of God's existence be result of education and acquired ideas? "If such were the case, how could this intuitive sense be possessed by savages?" If
intuition of a
Supreme Being's existence were
only an education fruit, it would be
restricted, and
it would only exist, like all
other acquired knowledge, inside the mind of those who had received
the
special education to which it could be due. Is the first cause of things formation to be found in the matter essential properties? "If such were the case, what would be the cause of properties? There must always be a first cause." To
attribute the first formation of things to the matter essential
properties would be taking the effect as the cause,
for properties are themselves an effect which must have a
cause. |
