God
(Part 3)
Text below comes from The Spirits' Book, by Allan Kardec
(Book First - Causes. Chapter I)

Can humans understand the essential nature of God?

"No. Humans lack a sense required to understand it."

Will humans ever become able to understand the Divinity mystery?

"When they become free from matter darkness and when, by their perfection, they have brought themselves nearer to God, they will see and understand the Eternal."

Inferiority of human faculties renders it impossible for humans to understand the essential nature of God. As the earthly humans live their spiritual infancy, they often confound Creator and creature and attribute to the former the imperfections of the latter. But, as long as their moral sense develops, humans penetrate deeper into things of Nature and become abler to form a fair and reasonable idea of the Supreme Intelligence, although such idea will always be imperfect and incomplete.

As we cannot understand the essential nature of God, can we have an idea of some of divine perfections?

"Yes, of some of them. Humans will understand them better as long as they raise themselves above matter. They will obtain glimpses of divine perfection through the exercise of intelligence."

When we say God is eternal, infinite, unchangeable, immaterial, unique, all-powerful, sovereignly fair and good, don't we have a complete idea of divine attributes?

"Judging from your point of view, yes, because you think that you can sum up everything by using these words. But you should understand that there are things which surpass the intelligence of the smartest human, and for which your language, limited to your ideas and sensations, lacks expression. Reason tells you that God must possess these perfections in the highest degree, because if one of them were lacking, or were not possessed by the Creator in an infinite degree, God would not be superior to all and, consequently, would not be God. In order to be above all things, God must undergo no vicissitude. The Almighty must have no imperfection that imagination can conceive."

God is eternal.
If God had a beginning, the Creator might have
either sprung from nothing or been created by some previous intelligence. Thus we arrive, step by step, at the idea of infinity and eternity.

God is unchangeable.
If God was subject to change, the laws which rule the universe would lack stability.

God is immaterial.
The Omnipotent's nature differs from everything that we call matter, otherwise God would be changeable, as the Supreme Majesty would be subject to the matter transformations.

God is unique.
If there were several gods, there wouldn't be unity of plan, execution and control in the universe.

God is all-powerful.
This is because God is unique. If the Most High lacked sovereign power there would be something more powerful, or no less powerful, than the Divinity. In such case, God wouldn't have created everything and whatever the Almighty had not created would be work of another intelligence.

God is sovereignly fair and good.
The
divine laws providential wisdom is clearly revealed both in the smallest things and in the greatest. Such wisdom renders it is impossible to doubt the divine justice and goodness.
